What’s On: October Events

With a fair few events coming up we thought it’d be helpful to round them up into one post so you don’t miss out on what’s happening in our palm tree-fringed, seaside town and its surrounds. Be it a long lunch in Palm Cove, an evening of culture, or a fun run, we’re pretty sure there’s something that’ll pique your interest.

Reef Feast Palm Cove, 6 – 9 October

Only a 30-minute drive away, down one of the most scenic coastal routes in Australia is Palm Cove, host to Reef Feast. This three-day classy culinary celebration will give you a taste of the region’s cuisine, produce and lifestyle via a range of events, including six stages buzzing with various cooking demos, live music, and market stalls galore.

Fancy a long lunch dining at your choice of a Palm Cove restaurant? Or perhaps kicking back with fresh prawns and oysters on the jetty is more your thing. Whatever your preference, Reef Feast has you covered. Check out details here: http://reeffeast.com.au/whats-on/

Porttoberfest, 15 October

Never a town to let the party pass us by, Port Douglas has its own answer to Oktoberfest; Porttoberfest. It makes sense that this year’s event is being held at the new kid on the block at the Reef Marina: Hemingway’s Brewery. Expect live bands, beers from around the world, and German fare to soak up the cold ones.

Port Shorts, 28 – 29 October

According to Port Shorts Ambassador Stephen Curry, “Port Shorts is Australia’s newest and shiniest short film festival.” For any aspiring movie makers out there, get your submissions in now! The deadline is 30 September and there’s $15,000 worth of cash and prizes up for grabs. For those who prefer to spectate rather than participate, Saturday, 29 October is the night when you’ll be able to see the short films yourself, under the stars and with great food and live entertainment too. Not a bad way to spend an evening. The Port Shorts website is the best spot for any burning questions you may have: http://www.portshorts.com/

GBR Marathon Running Festival, 6 November

While this post is meant to be about events in October, we had to cover the Tropical Journeys Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival. It’s rapidly becoming one of the ‘must do’ events on the Australian running calendar, as stated on its website and it’s not too late to start training! We’ve certainly seen this event grow over the years, and with Port Douglas providing the perfect destination to recuperate post-run it’s easy to see why. From the gruelling 74km Ultra Marathon to the 5km fun run there are a range of distances to choose from, including the half marathon and full marathon of course. The informative event website provides you with all you need to know about this event: http://www.greatbarrierreefmarathon.com.au/

Our aim is to post one of these What’s On blogs every two or three months. So keep a look out and let us know if there’s an event you think we’ve missed!
